About The Golden Tarp Award

Respected By The Industry

High testing standards — high expectations of dankness. This is a cannabis flower competition for light deprivation farmers only, and your flowers need to be clean and powerful for a chance in the Top 16. The Golden Tarp Award celebrates cannabis grown using sunlight using light deprivation techniques to take advantage of Nature but still producing cannabis with ideal indoor visual characteristics.

How The Golden Tarp Award Began

Light dep practices began to flourish in the Emerald Triangle’s craft cannabis community in the early 2010s, particularly in Humboldt. This technique produced exceptional quality cannabis with high cannabinoid and terpene levels within a shorter time frame. Even though light dep farmers were producing stellar flowers, many weren’t being recognized for the high levels of craft they were achieving. Kevin Jodrey and William “Oos” Pedro of Wonderland Nursery wanted to change that. .

The Golden Tarp Award is designed to recognize the farmers who show exceptional skill and craftsmanship in light dep, at an event that is right here in the heart of Humboldt County. Since the inaugural event in 2014, we have invited sponsors and vendors who we know and trust to participate every year, and we continue to welcome qualified speakers to tackle timely topics and the pressing questions in our community.

Come see the celebration for yourself on Nov. 18, 2017 at The Mateel Community Center, or join us digitally for our first ever fully LIVE stream Golden Tarp Award.

The Judge Experience

Become a Golden Tarp Light Dep Cannabis judge

Become a Golden Tarp Light Dep Cannabis judge

It’s not just an elite group of industry insiders that decides who wins the Golden Tarp Award. Community members who come out to the event have a chance to be randomly selected as a judge right when they walk in the door on Nov. 18, 2017.

These newly minted judges will be whisked away to an off-site Judge’s Hall. They will join our panel of selected judges to sample and score the Top 16 entries in 4 flavor categories – Floral, Fuel, Earth, Fruity. All the entries that reach a judge’s lips have tested clean. Read more about our high testing standards. Each judge will make their own personal choice for which entry is best in show.

The Judge’s Hall will be streamed LIVE with guest hosts, interviews, insights, and a first behind-the-scenes look at how flowers are analyzed at a craft cannabis competition. There’s a high bar to qualify and a bronze-cast, hand-crafted trophy (plus other prizes) for the farmer who takes home the top spot.

This rich, industry content will draw views from around the world for a glimpse inside the Emerald Triangle — find out how your brand can sponsor our video content for an ENTIRE YEAR!

What is Light Dep?

light deprivation greenhouse cannabis

Light deprivation, aka light dep, is the process of forcing plants to flower with sunlight in a time of year that is not normally the flowering period of the sun’s natural lighting cycle. Light dep cannabis is typically grown in greenhouses and, at specific times, tarps are used to block all incoming light for a specific time frame in order to manipulate the plant’s life cycle.
