This is one important panel for those that are already in the industry and vying to make it through the compliance obstacle race. One of the many challenges facing those in this industry is the patchwork approach to cannabis regulation from county to county. It has a huge impact on all players big and small but none feel it as acutely as those that are on the craft-scale side of the industry.
You’ve seen the same story unfold county after county, an already averse-to-cannabis local board of supervisors or legislators is faced with trying to regulate something the voters want but they don’t have a clue how to approach. Rather than try to meet the challenge for the benefit and safety of their constituents, they reach an impasse and kick the can down the road.
When a large corporation suffers this kind of delay, they stand to lose millions while waiting for change to come but they can survive. The same can’t be said for the smaller and medium sized operations vying to compete in the same space. A negative local regulatory situation can sideline a new entrepreneur or blindside one already trying to move from illicit to legal. So getting a heads up and insights from people that are dealing with these sorts of challenges on a daily level is a huge benefit to your business in 2018. So we are very happy to curate this panel for our community and industry.
To that end we’ve asked a number of experts from multiple perspectives all working at the local level to the panel. Jackie McGowan is the principal consultant at CanAccelerate a consulting firm that helps people start in the industry. She has an extremely popular and active Facebook group called ‘California – City & County Regulation Watch’ where almost daily, new news of local level outcomes are posted for the benefit of the group. We also have Terra Carver, Executive Director of Humboldt County Growers Alliance who’s organization has been one of the most deeply involved and in touch with the regulatory matters of Humboldt County, arguably the most advanced and comprehensive of all county cannabis regulations to share her insights. They are joined by Omar Figuero, one of the leading cannabis lawyers in the industry who advises multiple successful clientele and has been deeply involved in the industry since his days at Pier 5 Law Firm with the esteemed Tony Serra. We’ve also added Lindsay Robinson, Executive Director of the California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) who brings a wealth of information from their experience championing the industry at the State level. Then to round out the panel we have Dale Geringer, CA NORML’s Executive Director, who has been active in this industry championing the legalization of cannabis for many years.
We are really excited about the insights that will come from this panel and we hope you’ll show up in person to ask questions or go to the chat online on the Panel Feed to watch and engage. Our goal is to educate and prepare so come learn from the experts and their successes and mistakes they made during their journey.
